Lanzhou University of Technology, a university of science and engineering with a long history, is located in Lanzhou, the provincial capital of Gansu Province, which was once an important fortress on China’s historic Silk Road. The university was first established in 1919 as Gansu provincial Technical School. In 1958, the school was renamed Lanzhou Polytechnic Institute. In the same year, the Institute was renamed as Gansu University of Technology after merging with Gansu Jiaotong College. In 1965, the University expanded when three academic programs from Northeast Heavy-Machine Building Institute and one from Beijing Machine-Building Institute merged and became a part of the University. These programs were part of First Machine-Building Industry Ministry of China prior to transfer. Subsequent to the reorganization of the State Council of China in 1998, the University is administrated by both the central and local government, with the local government having the major responsibility for operation. The University was renamed as Lanzhou University of Technology in 2003. After 95 years of development, the university has become a comprehensive and well-recognized scientific and technological institution of high education. The University has great strength in engineering, a strong foundation in science fields and excellent programs in liberal arts. It has built a multi-disciplinary, multi-level, multi-type academic system which including many doctoral, master’s and bachelor degree programs. The university plays an important supporting role in the social and economic development of Northwest China. The university now has 16 provincial key academic and research programs, 5 post-doctoral research stations, 5 level one (national level) doctoral programs, 25 level two doctoral programs, 18 level three master programs, 91 level two master programs, 18 Master of Engineering and professional license of Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Accounting (MPAcc) programs, 68 undergraduate majors and 6 national special programs. The Hi-Tech center of the university is among the first batch approved at the national level. The university also has two national scientific and technological innovation centers, 5 national laboratories and engineering research centers, 31 provincial research institutes, 20 university-enterprise cooperative technology engineering centers and 32 other research institutes.
