China University of Geosciences (CUG) was founded in 1952 as Beijing College of Geology, which was formed by merging the departments of geology and engineering of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Tangshan Railway College and other universities. In 1960, it was designated as a national key university by the Central government. Emigrated during the Cultural Revolution. In 1975, it moved to Wuhan and was renamed Wuhan College of Geology. In 1987, the State Education Commission approved the change of the name of Wuhan College of Geosciences to China University of Geosciences, with two schools in Wuhan and Beijing and its headquarters in Wuhan. In 2000, it entered the list of universities directly under the Ministry of Education. In March 2005, the headquarters of the university was abolished, and Wuhan and Beijing were independent schools. In 2006, the Ministry of Education and the former Ministry of Land and Resources signed an agreement to jointly build China University of Geosciences. As of December 2021, the University has Nanwangshan Campus and Future City campus, covering a total area of 1,474,353 square meters and a total campus area of 1,385,752.04 square meters; It has 23 colleges and 69 undergraduate programs.
