Hainan Medical University, referred to as "Sea Medicine", is located in Haikou City, the capital of Hainan Province. It is the only public medical school in Hainan Free Trade Port. It is the first batch of national pilot universities for excellent doctor education and training program, the first batch of undergraduate colleges of the Ministry of Education for comprehensive professional reform and the first batch of educational informatization pilot units. The school's predecessor was the private Haiqiang Advanced Medical Technical School founded in 1947 by Mr. Lin Xiaohai, who served as the first president, and the private Hainan University Medical School founded in 1948 with Mr. Song Ziwen as the first chairman. The two schools were merged in 1951 into the Hainan Special Medical School (1977-1979 undergraduate education trial), and later changed its name to Hainan Medical College. In 1983, it was merged into Hainan University and became Hainan University Medical College. In 1993, Hainan Medical College was formally established with the approval of the national administrative department of education, under the supervision of the Hainan Provincial People's Government. In 2003, it was identified by the Ministry of Education as a joint training unit for master's degree postgraduates, approved as an authorized unit for master's degree in 2013, and approved as an authorized unit for doctoral degree in 2019. As of December 2023, the University has two campuses, covering an area of 1323.05 mu, with a total construction area of 652,200 square meters, teaching and research administrative rooms of 250,000 square meters, teaching and research equipment worth 354.35 million yuan; It has 20 teaching institutions and offers 30 undergraduate majors. 1 post-doctoral research center, 1 first-level doctoral program, 5 first-level master's programs, and 5 professional master's programs; There are 1,251 full-time teachers; There are 15135 full-time students in the university, including 72 doctoral students, 1405 master students (including 14 graduate students), 11766 undergraduate students (including 653 international students).
