In 1958, the two schools merged to form Shanghai Normal College. In 1972, the five schools merged to form Shanghai Normal University. In 1978, Shanghai Normal University was restored. In 1981, it became the first batch of master's degree conferring units in the country. It was renamed Shanghai Normal University in 1984. In 1986, it was approved as a doctoral degree conferring unit. In 1994, it merged with Shanghai Technical Normal University to form the new Shanghai Normal University. From 1997 to 2003, Shanghai Normal College, Nanlin Normal School Huangling Health Care Teachers Department, Shanghai Xingzhi Art Normal School, Shanghai Teacher Training Center, Shanghai Tourism College, etc. were successively merged or placed under the school management . As of December 2021, the school has two campuses, Xuhui and Fengxian, covering an area of about 1.35 million square meters, a building area of more than 720,000 square meters, and a library collection of more than 3.3 million books; there are more than 20,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 8,900 graduate students , more than 1,000 international students.
