The main body of the school was formerly known as Qinhuangdao Foreign Languages College, which was later renamed Tianjin Foreign Languages College. In 1974, the former Tianjin Foreign Languages College, the former Tianjin Foreign Languages School, the former Tianjin Normal University’s Japanese major, and the former Hebei University’s foreign language and Chinese majors were reorganized into Tianjin Foreign Languages University. In 1981, it was approved as one of the first batch of master’s degree conferring units. In 2010, it was renamed Tianjin Foreign Studies University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. As of May 2022, the school currently has two campuses, Wudao Avenue and Binhai, covering a total area of 464,218.7 square meters.
