It is the first independent national higher music institute in China. The first president is Mr. Cai Yuanpei. In September 1929, it was renamed the National Academy of Music. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school was formerly known as the "East China Branch of the Central Conservatory of Music". It was named as the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1956. It is a key institution directly under the Ministry of Culture. Now it is a joint institution of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Shanghai. From 1949 to 1984, composer, music theorist and music educator He Luting served as president (later honorary president) for a long time.
