The college's predecessor was the "National Conservatory of Music" in Shanghai, co-founded by the democratic revolutionist, educator and thinker Cai Yuanpei and the music educator Xiao Youmei on November 27, 1927. It is the first independent national higher music institute in China. The first president is Mr. Cai Yuanpei. In September 1929, it was renamed the National Academy of Music. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school was formerly known as the "East China Branch of the Central Conservatory of Music". It was named as the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1956. It is a key institution directly under the Ministry of Culture. Now it is a joint institution of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Shanghai. From 1949 to 1984, composer, music theorist and music educator He Luting served as president (later honorary president) for a long time. As of July 2019, the college has 13 departments (departments), 3 secondary colleges, and affiliated middle schools and primary schools; There are 2440 full-time students, 528 teachers and staff, 307 full-time teachers, 29 foreign teachers, 136 international students, and 630 students from the primary school attached to the secondary school.
